WOODMILL & community center // PROVIDENCE, RI

[a study of traditional woodworking and New England making]
This was an in depth analysis of an abandoned and defunct factory building in Providence, Rhode Island. Through extensive precedent research of both the practice and product of woodworking, I produced a plan for the adaptive re-use of a portion of the building to create a municipal wood mill.

PRECEDENTs

  • The Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum

  • The Log Cabin

  • The Adirondack Chair

These precedents all employ a simplicity of design and combination of elements in both concept and use, that are crucial in the restoration and renovation of architecture.

SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK // QUEENS, NY

For this project, I designed an open kitchen collaboration proposed for Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, NYC.

Working together in collaboration with: Neil LoganRirkrit Tiravanija, and Mark DeSuvero

I created a kitchen combining one of DeSuvero's existing sculptures, and two on site shipping containers. My design was based on the idea of minimal imposition to the existing sculpture park, while focusing on the reuse of available structure and materials at every possible level.

A few programatic details of the space are its simple 1st floor kitchen, an eating area an small garden balcony, a fully sustainable bathroom, an enclosed office space featuring a full ceiling skylight, and a 20ft. descending outdoor cinema screen.

GALLERY & POP-UP SHOP // PROVIDENCE, RI

To start off my final semester at RISD, the Interior Architecture Department hosted a 4 day charrette redesigning a local gallery exhibit space in Providence. We competed in groups of eight submitting two 24x36 boards for blind critique with a budget of 25,000$. Our design received first prize, and is currently under consideration for grant backing and construction. The essence of our design focused on true adaptability and simplicity to allow the work and objects within the space to frame the visitors experience.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL // PROVIDENCE, RI

"Commonly known as The Equitable Building, One Custom House Street was first constructed in 1872, one of the first structures to use a "cast iron" façade in Providence. Its internal structure is comprised of old world four inch square wooden planks salvaged from early 19th century sailing vessels."

The design for this project is rooted in the history of Providence. The city has lead a rich path through industry over the years, particularly in wool and steel. Elements of recycled wood and iron punctuate different spatial qualities with which to weave the building together (circulation horizontally / built-in bookshelf and end table vertically). This is meant to embody the warps and wefts of worsted wool.

PENTHOUSE APARTMENT // PROVIDENCE, RI

Explore...a space tailored to your dreams. A home in the center of bustling downtown Providence with breathtaking views of the city skyline, Narragansett Bay, WaterFire, the East Side’s historic architecture and inspiring sunsets. Imagine Four Star hotel amenities at your fingertips and indoor access to the city’s premier shopping, dining and events. This is living at - The Residences Providence.

The design for this program began with the concept of separating spaces in a penthouse apartment through the lifestyles of its for occupants.

This idea of letting the inhabitants define the space through the iteration of objects contained within it, allowed the preservation of a relatively open plan, yet maintained the programmatic separation that any normal home requires.

MOBILE HOME CONCEPT

HOME /// [hohm] - noun
the place in which one's domestic affections are centered

The design for this mobile home is based from my personal feeling towards the meaning of home, and the ability to travel between two sites. I created human powered bicycle trailer that features a full size bed, a working sink, a exterior charcoal grill, and a lounge chair.

RUINAS DEL CONVENTO DE LA CONCEPCIÓN // ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA

Collaborative study between the Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture Departments at the Rhode Island School of Design led to this project based around the “Ruinas del Convento de la Concepción,” in Antigua, Guatemala. The objective was to create an artist’s residence housed in these ancient ruins that would not only restore the grandeur of the historic site, but serve as a place to revitalize the community.

Residency on location is designed for architects and urban planners: anyone interested in the study of human scale in an architectural context. Programatic elements are laid out to serve as semi-isolated nodes of circulation to allow residents to take an altered perspective on the landscape, and allow a simple separation of private and public space with a delicate footprint.

Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua, Guatemala

CONTEXT

The site is located on the edge of historic Antigua, Guatemala.

The La Concepcion Convent is attached to a beautiful two story home along with a small guest house and spacious grounds. There is also a small in-ground pool and mid-sized storage shed. The gate to the grounds is in its original condition and will become a crucial access point for any program iteration.

PROGRAM

The residence will generally host 12 mid term residents, 3 long term residents, and 1 program director ( along with his or her family).

All participants will be expected to upkeep, curate, and contribute to an onsite gallery. This gallery will serve an important function, serving as the guage of public diffusion in Antigua, and a way to integrate into the local art community.

European Honors Program | Independent practice

EUROPEAN HONORS PROGRAM // (E.H.P.)

During my sixth semester at Rhode Island School of Design I was selected to be a part of the European Honors Program. I spent six months studying in Rome, Italy at the Piazza dei Cenci along with twenty-four other students. My time there was spent studying Italian language and local art history, while pursing my independent interests in the process of making. While there I crafted several handmade leather goods for local exhibition around Rome.
